SUMMARY:Le Nozze di Figaro
DESCRIPTION:“Through the brilliant weaving of music and words\, this masterpiece intertwines the destinies of four generations of women. Amid social pretenses and the failure of language itself\, it brings their vulnerabilities and strengths into plain sight. In the midst of this diabolical pace of disguise and ruse\, escapes and ambushes\, where each aria and line of the score winks at both tradition and modernity on multiple layers (and not without humor)\, there is\, in fact\, no space left. \nNo space to breathe\, to move\, to express one’s truth. \nI believe the struggles of these women—when they collide with the desires of others\, power dynamics at play\, and the very necessity of their own protection—do not feel distant from us. What part of this fable would fall short or still stand when facing the imagination and dreams of a girl from our time? \nTo figure this out\, I propose to follow the story of Suzanne’s wedding through the eyes of a young girl\, adding a fifth generation to connect us to our legacies. What have we learned about the institution of marriage? This is the question mark I wish to draw on stage\, leaving it open for the audience to ponder. Because sometimes\, falling suddenly silent and leaving things “in the open” is the first step toward being heard.” \nJorinde Keesmaat\, Stage Director \n\n\nW.A. SUMMARY:The world's wife
DESCRIPTION:The World’s Wife is based on an anthology of poems by Carol Ann Duffy and reflects on collective stories\, historical events and myths\, told from an altered\, female perspective. Inspired by Duffy’s poems\, composer Tom W. Green wrote a chamber opera for singer\, string quartet and looping station. Throughout the opera\, different female characters take the stage\, both historical and mythological\, ranging from the sexually awakened little-red cap to the motherly Queen Herod. By way of response\, Green’s composition contains music from past female composers who were sometimes unduly ignored\, such as Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn. \nThe Ragazze Quartet and Dutch opera director Jorinde Keesmaat are for the first time creating a fully staged version of the opera. Keesmaat (known from a.o. Andriessen’s Anais Nin + Odysseus Women) is intrigued by the absence of the female voice which paradoxically speaks through Duffy’s poems. While stating their individuality\, the women in the poetry are at the same time trapped in a male narrative. Seeking to weave their own narrative\, five female performers explore their historical and mythological predecessors. They are guided by the warm baritone singing of transgender opera singer Lucia Lucas\, who has recognised and has responded to her inner voice unlike anyone else. Together\, they embark on a journey which leads to a (re)discovery of a collective and individual\, female voice. \nRepertoire: The World’s Wife\, \na chamber opera by Tom W. Green with poetry by Carol Ann Duffy\nPerformers: Ragazze Quartet\, Lucia Lucas\nDirection: Jorinde Keesmaat\nDecor: Sammy Van den Heuvel\nCostumes: Sasja Strengholt\nLighting: Tim van ’t Hof\nDramaturgy: Lalina Goddard\nMake-up: Radna Berendsen\nSound: Koen Keevel\nVisuals: Bureau Merkwaardig

SUMMARY:Sin-Eater
DESCRIPTION:Maria Allen\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nSIN-EATER is a work of ritual music-theatre exploring the nature of power in western civilization through its connection to eating and food. An international collaboration\, it was composed by David T. Little (US) directed by Jorinde Keesmaat (NL)\, and features powerful performances by The Crossing\, conducted by Donald Nally (US) and Ragazze Quartet (NL). Drawing connections across time\, the work includes texts by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin\, Stephen Crane\, Wilfred Owen\, Harold McGee\, Anne Elizabeth Moore\, Jonathan Swift\, and others\, using juxtaposition to reveal deeper meaning. \n              “Tell me what you eat and \n          I’ll tell you what you are.” \n                  – Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin \nThe work is rooted in the history of the Sin-Eater itself: an ancient practice in which bread\, placed on the corpse of a person of means\, would absorb that person’s sins. A poor “rascal from the outskirts of town” would then be brought in to eat the bread\, taking on the sins of the deceased\, and allowing them to enter Heaven. Through the lens of this practice\, SIN-EATER investigates whom we ask to sin or suffer for us today. \n       “By a fortunate coincidence\, the methods \n          of slaughter that result in good quality meat \n          are also the most humane.” \n                  – Harold McGee \nAnthropological accounts of the historical practice frame modern reports of first responders\, essential workers in medicine and food processing\, morgue truck workers\, women\, soldiers\, executioners\, social media content moderators\, and others; individuals whose jobs\, or mere lives\, expose them to dangerous or difficult conditions\, requiring them to take on lasting trauma as they work to keep us safe\, healthy\, fed\, or blissfully unaware of the dark forces always around us. Indeed\, SIN-EATER winds a path through the dark terrains of human experience\, shining light on the power differentials we live with every day\, so common we no longer see them; seeking a path through disinfecting sunlight toward a better way of being. \n          “A hundred thousand useless mouths and \n          backs put to use\, and for their own good.” \n                  –  after Jonathan Swift \n\nThe Crossing Choir & Ragazze String Quartet\nDonald Nally – conductor\nLights – Eric Southern\nLalina Goddard – dramaturgy
