Presenting the latest in cutting–edge new music with an emphasis on performances that push the envelope\, the festival invites artists to perform their newest work in music\, multimedia\, and beyond. A showcase for all that National Sawdust stands for as a venue\, FERUS transcends traditional tropes to let audiences Hear It New! \nChimera is a drag queen opera and a character we are creating getting inspiration from each drag performer’s personal stories and our own life experiences. We see her at various moments in her life via three simultaneous performances that showcase different sides of her identity or even possibly different incarnations. Each performer has a significant transformation throughout the course of the opera and everything is visible to the audience: the vulnerability\, confidence\, self­expression\, repression\, loneliness and fabulousness revealing intimately personal as well as social narratives. \nThis work in progress will present a riveting exploration of the complexities of identity and self-presentation. Ten international female composers were asked to write a song about being a woman in times like these and what it means to them\, to live their life\, work\, be a mother\, a wife\, a composer\, an artist\, a sexual being\, hard or soft\, serious or funny\, angry or afraid\, violent or tender.  Through their songs\, the female voice will be heard. \nTen different songs will be performed\, ten different female archetypes will be shown\, -embodied by the Dutch soprano Bauwien van der Meer and pianist Reinild Mees-.  We all know these archetypes and involuntarily categorize women accordingly. \nAlso in form we go to the archetype: the song\, the oldfashioned Lied is an archetype\, the basis for every (vocal) composition. Have her delight you which is fortunately for her to be for me to be for her to be for me to be for me for her for her to be me for me for her and she for me and come.” – Gertrude Stein \nThe opera To Be Sung by French composer Pascal Dusapin was written in 1997 on extracts from A Lyrical Opera Made By Two by American novelist and poet Gertrude Stein  (1874 – 1946). Stein wrote her ‘opera’ during the first world war on the island of Mallorca. Far away from the war\, Stein stayed on the island with her life partner Alice Babette Toklas and their dog Basket. Stein is infamous for her writings often described as unreadable and incomprehensible. Her modernist abstract\, angular and tautological way of writing is perhaps best compared to the cubist paintings of Picasso\, a dear friend of hers. Through use of rhythm and the play of sounds and words\, Steins language is close to music. Stating that all meaning is absent in Steins writings would be false. Inspired by her own experiences she talked about the universal theme’s of human life\, without ever being too concrete. To Be Sung in particular was conceived as a declaration of love to her wife Alice B. Toklas and written for their 20th anniversary. The piece is an erotic\, exciting and very intimate idyll that describes the profound love between two women. \nTo be sung is performed by four women: three singing and one speaking. The women represent one single body. Two become one through love. Intimacy is made visible and sensible. The distinction between men and women becomes obsolete. It is a universal love that Stein speaks about. A love that seems to be only possible when it is shielded from an outside world\, from war\, from oppression and from social judgement. This forms simultaneously an utopic contradiction and perhaps the only livable possibility. \nWith To be Sung Dutch director Jorinde Keesmaat continues her collaboration with the Center of Contemporary Opera in New York. In 2016 she gave her American debut with Louis Andriessen’s Odysseus’ Women & Anaïs Nin. Pushing the boundaries of what music theatre can be\, Jorinde Keesmaat developed a very own theatrical language with a profound physicality at it’s core. SUMMARY:Impossible Voyage - 6 hours concert - Strijkkwartet Biennale
DESCRIPTION:Een reis van zes uur\, dwars door de oeuvres van drie monumentale componisten. Zoals de titel van dit concert The Impossible Voyage al insinueert\, zal het geen gemakkelijke reis zijn. Zie het als een bergbeklimming; een optimistische\, soms zware klim\, met op de top Sjostakovitsj’ Vierde en Brittens Tweede strijkkwartet. De regie van Jorinde Keesmaat speelt vanuit de muziek met licht en placering en creëert zo een ‘gesamtkunstwerk’ waarin je volledig in de muziek opgaat. \nNa de optimistische\, energieke klim dalen het Spaanse Cuarteto Casals en Belgische Quatuor Danel af in de diepte met Beethovens Opus 131 en Sjostakovitsj’ Vijftiende strijkkwartet. Uiteindelijk vinden het Doric String Quartet en Quatuor Danel het licht in de laatste kwartetten van Britten en Beethoven. \nRegie: Jorinde Keesmaat\nLicht: Wijnand van der Horst

DESCRIPTION:Met het theaterconcert What the Waf brengt Kobra een ode aan kunstbeweging De Stijl en de dadaïstische soirees van begin vorige eeuw. Precies een eeuw na de oprichting van de kunstbeweging kijkt Kobra terug: wat motiveerde de kunstenaars destijds? Muzikaal aanknopingspunt voor What the Waf is pianiste Nelly van Doesburg\, vrouw van Theo van Doesburg\, grondlegger van De Stijl. Nelly speelde eigenlijk het liefst Chopin\, maar mocht dit niet van haar man Theo. Ook vond manlief dat Nelly als kunstenares niet zoveel waard was: vrouwen waren er immers voor de performance\, mannen voor het creëren. \nNou Theo\, dat zullen we nog wel eens zien. In deze voorstelling speelt Kobra onder regie van Jorinde Keesmaat\, met de balans tussen anti-kunst en kunst\, en tussen esthetiek en non-esthetiek\, zowel in beeld als muziek. What the Waf is een vocale reactie op de hedendaagse maatschappij\, met muziek van o.a. Kurt Schwitters en Eric Satie. Net als De Stijl wil What the Waf het publiek uitdagen: Wat is wenselijk? Wat is schoonheid? Heeft het dadaïsme nog een functie in onze maatschappij? \nWhat the Waf is een humoristische\, grensoverschrijdende voorstelling\, waarin een breed scala aan muzikale genres\, theater en kunstgeschiedenis één geheel vormen.
